Immersion Writers Africa Oral Histories Workshop

December 10-17, 2026 Kigali, Rwanda

Join us for a seven day immersion in Kigali, Rwanda centering oral history as a method of listening, documentation, and ethical engagement. Mornings are devoted to guided workshops on oral history theory, interview practice, and narrative responsibility, while afternoons focus on place-based learning through visits to sites such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial and community spaces central to Rwanda’s contemporary cultural life. Designed for writers, artists, students, scholars, and NGO professionals, this program offers a focused environment for learning how stories are gathered, held, and shared—shaped by history, memory, and relational accountability.

Alumi Reflections

Our Impact

“Having the opportunity to go to Senegal was really transformative for me,” Edusei reflected. “It was amazing to meet with the people, understand their culture and their food, and learn how they’ve been impacted by colonization and what they’re doing to subvert that.”

I don’t know if my ancestors passed these specific shores but I do feel like I’ve returned to a place I’ve already known. Dakar is gorgeous and fertile and every day I find myself in awe of the smallest adventures like buying mangos or watching kids play.
